A senior at Friends’ Central School, Poyraz Ozer is an outstanding physics student who was one of just five students in the entire country to be selected to compete on the U.S. team at the International Young Physicists' Tournament in Budapest this summer under the guidance of his physics teacher Deborah Skapik. He received a Certificate of Recognition from the Pennsylvania State Senators in July for his achievements in physics. Ozer is the founder and leader of the FCS STEM Competition Club, who earned Honorable Mention in the 2023 GOES Virtual Science Fair for their project, “Buffalo Bomb Cyclone,” awarded by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison. The STEM Competition Club team also won the American Chemical Society’s Chemagination Regional Award in the Environment category in 2024. Ozer explored the impact of environmental conditions on insects through sound analysis with his Friends’ Central science teacher John Gruber and presented the outcomes of his research at the School’s Natural History Research Conference last spring. He is the founder and leader of Friends’ Central’s Math Tutoring Club, providing math help to fellow students enrolled in courses spanning from geometry through calculus. Ozer is a member of the Friends’ Central swimming and water polo team and has been volunteering as a Teen Leader at Cradles to Crayons Leadership Corps, fundraising to end children’s clothing insecurity in the Philadelphia area. This year, he was promoted to Junior Champion for his ongoing volunteer work. Ozer served as the Leader of Communications and Layout of Focus, the School’s student-run newspaper. Two of his written works were published in FCS’s Ink art and literature magazine in 2023 and 2024 respectively. He has been also serving as a nominated member of the Friends’ Central Principal Representative Board.
