An active Admissions Ambassador and STEM Scholar, Barrera’s recent science fair project looks at being able to germinate seeds using simulated Mars soil. She won first place and a judges’ award (which included a cash prize) at the regional Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS), qualifying her for PJAS States in May at Penn State. Barrera also was involved in the design and building of the ROV (remotely operated vehicle) during the SeaPerch Challenge. During the day of the competition, Barrera impressed the judges with her ability to maneuver the ROV through the underwater hoop obstacle course in one of the shortest times of the day. With 15 minutes allotted for teams, Barrera completed the course in 2:03 minutes and her team received several awards, including the Women in Defense Liberty Chapter 2023 SeaPerch Challenge Award, given to a team for outstanding team innovation in the SeaPerch engineering design, build and demonstration of aquatic robotics. Barrera was one of 19 Upper School students selected to participate in Academy of Notre Dame’s 2023 International Sisters in STEM Symposium in July. More than 60 international students from Notre Dame’s sister school network will attend the Symposium, in whch students will engage in cross-cultural, problem-solving courses that address some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Villa Maria Academy's Anna Rago is Main Line Student of the Week - Oct. 7, 2018 To read the article on Anna Rago click here The Villa Maria Academy junior received Outstanding Achievement Awards in both science and math (algebra) and was recently nominated for the Liberty Museum and TD Bank’s Young Heroes Award. In college, she wants to study urban planning and nonprofit management with a focus on international urban planning and has taken an online class with a college in Singapore called Future Cities. Last summer, she traveled to Malawi, Africa (the third-poorest country in the world), for 18 days to work with Pamoza International, whose mission is to unite people in alleviating suffering and despair through Christian outreach and sustainable community development in the areas of education, entrepreneurship, agriculture and health. Rago has organized several fundraisers at Villa Maria for Pamoza International.

 Agnes Irwin's Caroline "Cookie" Quirk is Main Line Student of the Week (Nov. 6-12) To read the article on Cookie Quirk click here     A senior at Agnes Irwin School, Caroline “Cookie” Quirk is a National Merit Commended Scholar, and recently published an article in the Princeton Legal Journal titled “The High Stakes of Deepfakes: The Growing Necessity of Federal Legislation to Regulate this Rapidly Evolving Technology.” Quirk also serves on the school’s Discipline Committee, is a Student Tour Guide, and serves as a co-head of Mathletes as well as the Debate Club and the STEM Club. She is a writing center tutor, a member of Honor Council, and Digital Editor of the Wick, the school newspaper. She plays for Agnes Irwin’s squash team in the winter and rows crew in the spring.
