A junior at Episcopal Academy, Gavin Schmidt recently earned first place and a perfect score in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of science (PJAS) Regional Competition in the Ecology category. His project was titled “Effects of pH on carbonate structures and bacteria in the sea.” He has been selected to be one of the co-editors-in-chief of the school newspaper, the Scholium, for the 2023-24 school year. Schmidt is involved with the student-run arts group, the Install It club, and is an active member of Horizons at EA. He also is an active volunteer with EA’s Community Service Corps and the debate club (Junto). Schmidt had an internship last summer with a global non-profit organization called EcoHealth Alliance, where he worked on an environmental project taking place in Liberia. He also plays No. 1 singles for the EA boys’ varsity tennis team, and during the COVID pandemic, Schmidt and his younger sister started Super Fizz Soaps and learned about entrepreneurship.
